The Working Of An Offset Printer

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

Printing service is used by most companies for varied functions such as marketing and corporate communications. Offset printing is the most commonly used printing technology and learning about it is therefore helpful and essential.

Offset printing can generate a large number of prints quickly, which makes it less costlier than other technologies and also more well known. The clients giving big printing orders are advised by the printers to opt for offset printing due to this reason.

The ink employed during offset printing has oil as the medium and is insoluble in water. Its so called because in this method, images are not transported directly from the plates to the paper but this is done through rubber blankets as a medium.

The first step is preparing the images. When offset printing started, the images had to be developed by the use of film negatives and they were later transferred to aluminum plates. In the present times, the printers can make use of the image setting system for preparing the plates directly. The subsequent step is to transfer the plate on to a cylinder in the right manner. Then the water and ink are spread on the image plates, in that order. The ink is spread over the image and to stop it from overflowing, a thin layer of water is spread over the remaining part of the plate.

After painting it with ink, the image is kept on a rubber blanket which is on a different cylinder, leading the image to be reversed. The image is inverted to its right side by transferring the image to sheets which have been cut in line with the requirement and are put on a different cylinder.

The final steps of the printing job involve things such as stapling, pasting or arranging the printed sheets according to the instructions of the customer, and any printing company should easily manage these.
